This page contains information about the original MIDI-IR version 1, which is out of production. For the new MIDI-IR version 2, currently for sale, click here.
MIDI-IR PCB's are actually a handy platform for doing fun things with PIC microcontrollers and MIDI. Here are three mods I've done. None of these are supported by Wooster Audio, they are just fun ideas. I can provide the PIC hex file necessary for implementing these on request.
I wrote new firmware to turn MIDI-IR into a two channel sequencer. Sequences are 16 beats long and are clocked by MIDI-in. The left and right switches arm each channel for recording. The green button is used for tapping in rhythms.
In the above picture no hardware changes were done to the MIDI-IR. If desired, output jacks could be directly soldered to the MIDI-IR board in parallel with the IR LED's, to avoid having extra IR receiver boards.
The standard MIDI-IR has MIDI-thru, but no internal clock or MIDI-out, so you must have an external computer or sequencer to use it. I added a tempo-control pot and wrote new firmware to give this MIDI-IR the ability to be a MIDI master clock:
This mod requires some cutting of traces and rewiring, so it will ruin the normal mode of operation. Click on the picture to go to my flickr site to see details.
Details coming in the future when I am actually done. I have a MFOS sequencer which I am going to MIDI-fy with a MIDI-IR board.
